'Dancing With the Stars' - Season 24 standouts, trainwrecks & David Ross

‪Dancing with the Stars

" Dancing With the Stars "kicked off its 24th season with strong showings by two celebrity contestants with ties to the Bay State: Former Boston Red Sox catcher David Ross, and Stoneham native and Olympic ice skater Nancy Kerrigan.
Both acquitted themselves nicely on the dance floor.
Ross' former Chicago Cubs teammates cheered him on via Skype from spring training after judge Bruno Tonioli  called his performance "a quickstep on a field of dreams." Likewise, Kerrigan's waltz earned highmarks from judges and praise from judge Julianne Hough.
Based on 23 previous seasons of hardcore "DWTS" viewing, eyeballing the raw talent and the knowing the strength of the professional partners, here are my picks based on Monday night's season opener, along with the on-target zero-to-10 scoring of judges Hough, Tonioli, Len Goodman and Carrie Ann Inaba:
‪‪David Ross‬

See you in the finals
  • Touchdown! NFL running back Rashad Jennings and partner Emma Slater tapped into Bruno Mars "24K Magic" for a winning cha-cha-cha. "You have the magic to make it all the way," Hough proclaimed. (31/40)
  • Like the song she danced to, Olympic gymnast Simone Biles was "Untouchable." Her tango with Sasha Farber impressed all four judges. "That was the dance of the night," Goodman said.  (32/40)
Could be a contender
‪‪Maksim Chmerkovskiy‬ & ‪Peta Murgatroyd‬, ‪
  • Olympic ice skater and Stoneham native Nancy Kerrigan with Artem Chigvintse danced a Viennese waltz to Billy Joel's "She's Always a Woman to Me." Goodman called the duo "a pairing with great promise." (28/40)
  • Former Red Sox catcher  David Ross showed off his quickstep with Lindsay Arnold in a  number set to "Go, Cubs, Go."  Inaba described him as both smooth and charming. (28/40)
  • "Glee" actress Heather Morris with Maksim Chmerkovskiy dance a stellar Viennese waltz to "Make Something Beautiful." (28/40)
  • Fifth Harmony singer Normani Kordei and Valentin Chmerkovskiy executed a fine quickstep to "Good Time Good Life." (27/40)
  • "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills" star Erika Jayne danced a salsa some found raunchy set to "XXPEN$IVE"  with Gleb Savchenko. (24/40)
  • "Bachelor" contestant Nick Viall performed a cha-cha-cha with Peta Murgatroyd set to "Let Me Love You."  Viall has a strong partner in Murgatroyd, which may buoy his chances. (24/40)

Thanks for trying
  • Not-ready-for-prime-time dancing was performed by former "Saturday Night Live" comic Chris Kattan. His cha-cha-cha with with Witney Carson to "What is Love" was an epic fail. "The best thing about that cha-cha-cha was I won't have to watch it again," Goodman said. (17/40)
  • Mr. T and Kym Herjavec played it close to home with a cha-cha-cha set to "The A-Team Theme." Tonioli noted a lot of mistakes, but praised the former action star's enormous heart. (20/40)
  • Singer-guitarist Charo did a high-voltage salsa set to "Cuban Pete" with Keo Motsepe. However, the routine lacked technique. (21/40)
  • Bull rider-turned-model Bonner Boltonwith Sharna Burgess danced a sexy but flawed cha-cha-cha to Luke Bryan's "Move." (22/40)

Us President Donald Trump’s decision to fire Comey is another win for Vladimir Putin

In his wildest dreams, Russian leader (and former Soviet intelligence officer) Vladimir Putin could have never imagined the extent of his success during President Donald Trump’s first five months in office. Trump’s move on Tuesday to terminate FBI Director James Comey puts another huge point on the scoreboard for Putin — especially given the FBI’s lead role in probing possible collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia. Truth be told, though, Russia’s already doing pretty well. In just a few months, Putin’s intrigues have probably influenced the outcome of an American presidential election and produced a basket of spoils for Mother Russia, including bitter feuds between the White House and the CIA, rifts between the US and its allies, damage to the American press’s legitimacy and public standing, a standoff between the White House and the federal courts over immigration orders, and the slow  sabotage  of American government through neglect and mismanagement. If Putin

Clinton says false stories on Facebook helped Trump win election

Hillary Clinton on Wednesday said hoaxes and false news stories on Facebook contributed to her loss in last year's U.S. presidential election, adding to a list of factors she blames for her defeat. The former Democratic candidate said earlier this month that interference by Russian hackers and then-FBI director James Comey helped tip the election to Republican President Donald Trump. Speaking at a technology conference near Los Angeles, Clinton on Wednesday mentioned Facebook by name and said that fake stories spread on the social network influenced the information that people relied on. "The other side was using content that was just flat-out false and delivering it in a very personalized way, both sort of above the radar screen and below," Clinton said during an on-stage interview at the Code conference. A representative for Facebook could not immediately be reached for comment. Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg said just after the November e
