Al Sumaria TV channel has reported a source confirming the death within the Iraqi province of Nineveh.
The news channel have said his successor will be named soon.
The Russian Defence Ministry reported in June that the IS leader and 30 gunman had been killed by a Russian airstrip in Syria in May.
However, other reports claim that he was killed during a US bombing in Iraq.
Various media outlets have reported about the death of the IS leader, but this information has never been formally confirmed.
The 45-year-old was the leader of a jihadist organisation, which controls territory in several countries.
Al-Baghdadi’s last appearance in public was in a video clip when he made a sermon proclaiming the establishment of an Islamist ‘caliphate’ in Mosul’s Grand Nuri Mosque in June 2014.
America said it thought the leader was alive in December.
